Description
In a recent article, Baruch Halpern discussed the "intellectual pyrotechnics" of Trito-Isaiah, with particular reference to 62:4. (l) With not a few characteristic pyrotechnics of his own, he suggests, among other things, that the old names of Jerusalem and its hinterland, which are now to be replaced, indicate that Trito-Isaiah was working under the specific influence of Jeremiah. Apart from concerns about the correct understanding of a particular passage, the issue is of wider importance because of the current interest in inner-biblical citation/ interpretation/exegesis/allusion as a whole. In the wake of M. Fishbane's major study, many scholars have attended to the topic for a wide variety of purposes. (2) Just recently there has been a flurry of publications examining the use of earlier literature in the second part of Isaiah, (3) and, as might have been anticipated, the prominence of the use and reuse of Jeremiah has been highlighted. Alongside this, however, it is equally clear, and widely acknowledged, that the author(s) of Isaiah 56-66 also made reference back to the earlier parts of the book of Isaiah as well as to a variety of other biblical works. It is evident, therefore, that each individual example has to be weighed on its own merits. There can be no necessary presumption in favor of one source of influence over another.
